What you need to know about the status of the OT Compact.

Updated July 2025. Please carefully read this information, as your questions are likely answered here.

  • The OTC is not yet issuing compact privileges to practice. Use the form above to receive an email when applications open.
  • The application “go live” date for practitioners to apply for privileges to practice is still to be determined. Each OTC state will open applications at their own pace. The timeline for each state is not set by the OTC administrators. The OTC administrators are working closely with the states to support them through this process.
  • You cannot practice in an OTC state under the OT Compact, even if that state has enacted OTC legislation until applications open AND your application is approved.
  • You will need to apply through the OTC to receive your privileges to practice in OTC states.
  • The application will be linked from this webpage when the process opens for each state. You will come here to apply; you will not apply for OTC privileges to practice through state licensing boards.
  • Until you receive your OTC privilege to practice, you need a license to practice in any state you wish to provide OT services. Follow that state licensing board’s traditional licensing process to obtain your license to practice.

What is the Occupational Therapy Compact (OTC)?

The Occupational Therapy Licensure Compact (OT Compact) is an interstate compact, or formal agreement among states, that facilitates interstate practice of occupational therapy. Under the OT Compact, Occupational Therapists (OTs) and Occupational Therapy Assistants (OTAs) who are licensed in good standing in a Compact member state will be eligible to practice in other Compact member states via a “compact privilege,” which is equivalent to a license.

The OT Compact is enacted in some states, meaning those states have passed legislation to be part of the compact. However, the OT Compact is not yet operationalized, meaning the process to apply for and receive compact privileges is still developing.

CompactConnect – A comprehensive data system in development

CompactConnect is a national data system that is currently in development. It will provide data transfer abilities between states. States are in the process of piloting CompactConnect, which is necessary for states to upload their data and for practitioners to apply for their OTC privileges to practice. The OTC will utilize the data system to facilitate issuing privileges to practice. The OTC application process will occur through CompactConnect. For more information about the process to develop the comprehensive data system, please visit the external page: www.compactconnect.org.
